Erb's palsy is also known as brachial palsy and refers to the loss of movement or weakness of the arm that occurs when the collection of nerves around the shoulder, known as the brachial plexus, are damaged during delivery of a child. The tragedy is that most of the time, an Erb's palsy can be prevented by ensuring every safety precaution is taken for the birth such as careful monitoring and opting to perform a Cesarean section when appropriate.
At Grandy & Martin, we handle all types of birth injury cases, including where instances of Erb's palsy occurs. We take a detailed and compassionate approach when helping parents through this difficult time. Our Charlotte Erb's Palsy injury lawyers handle cases that result from:
- Breeched delivery and/or pressure on the baby's raised arms during a breeched (feet first) delivery
- Deliveries involving larger than average newborns where the doctor does not opt to perform a Cesarean section when that may have been more appropriate
- Difficulty delivering the baby's shoulder after the head has already emerged, and shoulder dystocia results
- The infant's head and neck pulling toward the side as the shoulders pass through the birth canal
- Sharply pulling on the shoulders during a head-first delivery
An Erb's palsy diagnosis can affect either the upper arm or can result in paralysis to the lower arm as well. In some cases, the hand can be affected, and an infant can present with an eyelid droop on the opposite side of their face because of the resulting nerve damage. In some severe cases, abnormal muscle contractions have been known to occur. This condition can be permanent and result partial or total loss of function of the affected nerves. It may also cause weakness or limited or no use of that limb.
In some cases, gentle massage can help treat this condition, but more severe cases may require treatment by a specialist and surgery on the nerves or tendon transfer to help the muscles affected by nerve damage if the baby's mobility has not improved by the time he or she is three to six months.
