Ken Martin grew up in New York and Massachusetts. He graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He then attended Wake Forest University Law School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He received his Juris Doctor in 1983. Ken Martin is an active member of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, North Carolina Advocates For Justice, North Carolina Advocates For Justice, Mecklenburg County Bar Association, Academy of Trial Lawyers of America, North Carolina Bar Association, and the Mecklenburg County Trial Lawyers Association.
